100 percent halal, certified suppliers Family-run, cooked by hand Order by WhatsApp and Instagram

We cook the food we grew up on. Both sides of it.

The jollof and small chops everyone knows, and the northern dishes that are hard to find over here: masa, vegetable stew, the food of an Eid morning. Every dish 100 percent halal, every dish made by hand, by us.

The road the recipes travelled

From Abuja to Letchworth.

Every dish on this page made the same trip: learned in a family kitchen in Nigeria, carried over, and cooked here by hand until it tasted like home again.

Masa with vegetable stew and yaji
Our signature

Masa. Northern Nigeria's best-kept secret.

Soft, golden rice cakes: crisp outside, pillowy inside, with the faint sourdough tang that comes from a proper slow ferment. Breakfast on Eid morning, the food of welcome at a naming ceremony, and almost impossible to find made properly in the UK. That gap is exactly why we make it.

Fresh food from the Aleerah kitchen
    Our story, in her voice

A home kitchen, opened up to yours.

I am a Muslim woman in Hertfordshire, and Aleerah Sugar and Spice is my kitchen, opened up to yours. I cook the Nigerian food I grew up on, both sides of it: the jollof everyone loves, and the northern dishes that are harder to find here. When I could not find masa made properly anywhere near me, I started making it myself. People asked for more. That is really how all of this began.

Halal is not a label for me; it is just how I cook, because it is how we eat at home. This is my work, with my husband behind me as support, and I only take a small number of events each month: I would rather cook for fewer people properly than for more people in a rush.

When your trays arrive, they were made by me. Not bought in, not outsourced. I hope it tastes like someone cooked it for you. Because someone did.
